XP & Microsoft "SideWinder Game Controller Software 4.0"

"Windows XP" now works with Microsoft's "SideWinder Game Controller Software 4.0"

"USB joystick/s ONLY"

ALL PILOT/s, ... you ask for it and now we think we got it so that you can give it a go.

Everything works, except the "Recorder Tab", if you click this, you will get an error.

The only hold up (nich) at this time is that you have to use your old profiles, that were made-up on the Windows 95/98/98SE/2K ... O/S systems. (to modify these, you have to use, the befor mentioned O/S's, then re-load them, on XP ... a bit bothersome, but will work)

Go to: (Windows Explorer)

C:/ Program File / Microsoft Hardware / Game Controllers / Profiles

Copy old Profile, that you want to use on Windows XP ... on a floppy disk.

Copy & paste, into the same location on the Windows XP O/S.

Go to:

Click: Download here and download the software to you desktop. Click "SAVE" and select "desktop".

Double click the ".zip file", downloaded to your desktop.

Select the:

Setup.exe (file) ... Install Application ... 6/28/2000 9:53 AM ... 12,672 (size)

Double click above file.

Then just follow the prompts.

Place the floppy disk into the floppy drive and copy & paste the "Profile" (old profile you want to use) to this location.

C:/ Program File / Microsoft Hardware / Game Controllers / Profiles

Close out Windows Explorer.

Setting up the software:

Right click the: "Game Controller Software 4.0" (down by clock on tool bar) (Red S/W) and go to: "Open Controller Panel: Game Controllers".

Click the: "Properties" box.

On the "Profiles Tab": (Item # 1)(click arrow right side of box & scroll to profile, you copied from the floppy disk)

Select the "Profile" you added, to the profiles list, then click "Apply".

Select the: "Settings Tab" and adjust the "Dead Zone" and "Range of Motion" settings on your stick, then click "Apply".

DO NOT SELECT the "Recorder Tab". (you will just get an error: An exception occurred while trying to run "Shell32.dll, Control_RunDLL joy.cpl" ... if you do just click "OK" and start over.

Select the "Test Tab" and see if all the slider/s button/s and hat switch, work. (throttle and rudder, all button/s)

Select the "Forces Tab". Turn em on or off, whichever way you like it.

If you made any changes, click "Apply" and then click "OK".

Start the "Air Attack Game" on your desktop or online and your ready to go.
Desktop = (Start > All Programs > VR-1 Games > Air Attack > Air Attack)

NOTE:

You will not, at this time, be able to use the "Recorder Tab", to make any changes in your Profile ... (your using a Profile you moved from another O/S to ... XP) ... your will have to make changes on old O/S then, copy and paste them here ... to, XP. But at least you will be able to use "old profiles" and fly the way you use to, with "old profile/s" and sticks, on Windows XP, now.

"USB sticks only" (at this time) I don't have a none USB stick, but Tank does and he states that it will not recognize it. We can not get a "Serial Port" to work at this time.

Hope I didn't drag this out to far, some people like (need) it to be as detailed a possible, which is good, in a way.

Cheers and happy hunting. ;)

Also keep in mind, ... this is still a work in progress (but usable, as is now): :P

Requirments: (these "XP" versions have been tried)

Windows XP Home Edition ... with service pack 2
Windows XP Professional ... with service pack 2

SideWinder Game Controller Software 4.0
Download here

USB sticks only (at this time) I don't have a none USB stick, but Tank does and he states that it will not recognize it, but will with an older USB port stick. X(

Joystick/s that work:

1. Microsoft, SideWinder Forcefeeback II (USB)

2. Microsoft SideWinder Precision 2 (USB)

Joystick/s that do not work:

1. Microsoft, SideWinder Precision Pro 1 (gameport connection)

This is still being worked on, so if ya have any problems, with it, ... post so we can work it out and/or try and find a fix for it.

Thanks gos to Bolt & Tank.

:grass::smoke4::grass:

[added] for the no-working "Settings Tab" ... to get it to work.

YO GUYS IT WORKS ...

IT WORKS ... BY GOD ... IT WORKS.

Steps:

1. Log in as administrator
2. Go to Control Panel
3. Select System
4. Select "advanced"-> "performance"-> "settings"
5. Select "Date Execution Prevention" tab.
6. Select turn on DEP for all programs.
7. Select c:\windows\system32\joy.cpl
8. Apply

At step 7

Have to click the ADD

Then go to the OPEN dialog box

select: windows

select: system32

Note: Don't look for: joy.cpl, cause you will not see it.

Go down to: File Name (box) type in: joy and select: joy.cpl

After you select joy.cpl you are taken back to the DEP dialog box.

Game Controllers Control Panel Applet will appear with a check mark in front of it.

Click Apply at the bottom of this dialog box. (DEP)

Restart your computer.

Start: Game controllers / click: properties / click: Recorder Tab

and you will see it does work.

Who saids ya can't teach old dogs new tricks ...

See ya in the skies. :P

Tulla,

Give me few more minutes ... checking everything ... for spelling and if I missed anything.

To make a long story short tho:

If thy want to use the software, just download and load, then copy and paste profile from old operating system to this one ... and go at it.

Simple but I wanted to spell it out for old farts like me.
:))

Right ... this is only good for old profiles because ... you have to have a "Profile" to fly with.

I don't know if any of the new profiles will work, just been working on getting XP to work with the 4.0 software.

You can set all but the "Recordings tab" ...

Give it a shot ... can allways delete it from "Add/Remove Programs".

I have tried the "default" settings, it uses the default in game settings.

You can adjust the "Dead Zone" and "Range of Motion" and "Forces", only with the software.

Give it a try and post back ...

BTW ... finished on the post above, if you want to start the translation/s.

Only works with USB stick/s.

If not USB stick ... will not recognize the stick.

Tulla maybe it will I just selcted "none" (using default values) on profiles and it fly/s on the defaults set inside the game ... hummm.

Tank just tried it without loading a profile at all ... no problems, just said if the stick is a "serial port" will not work with none USB sticks.

I don't have a none USB stick to try it with ... did you try it?
;)

Sidewinder Software 4.0 für XP

Another question:

The zipfile is called FFB2. Does it work for the precision pro 1 (without FFB) as well ?

zerstorer,

Just gave this a try ... and same old ... same old. (Recorder - Tab) No Joy;(

Steps:

1. Log in as administrator
2. Go to Control Panel
3. Select System
4. Select "advanced"-> "performance"-> "settings"
5. Select "Date Execution Prevention" tab.
6. Select turn on DEP for all programs.
7. Select c:\windows\system32\joy.cpl
8. Apply

1st try, found:

7. Select c:\windows\system32\joy.cpl (is not listed)

2nd try, found:

After doing through item 6, appling ... still not listed.

Switched back to previous DEP setting, re-booted.

I think the problem is caused by the new " enhanched virus protection" (EVP) built into the AMD64 bit CPU which is activated by: WinXP SP2.

Try to switch "enhanced virus protection" EVP on or off:

Log in as administrator. Go to Control Panel/System. Select tab " advanced/performance/settings". Select Date Execution Prevention Protection tab.
Select turn on DEP for all programs. Check "Run a DLL as a App".

Time wll tell if this setting will cause other problems for other apps.

___________________________________________________________

Never saw any: Check "Run a DLL as a App" listed nor did I see: Select c:\windows\system32\joy.cpl at any time.

T'was a nice idea....

Not. So the search for a decent stick continues.... can't wait to get back in there.
We're a bit rusty, haven't been out there for years, so we'll probably have to see if we can create a room to practice and then go to rookie rooms.

I noticed in the rules that strafing is forbidden, boy, we used to do that so much, lol. Of course, there was always the AA that could get you and the watch dogs.
I was in the original Musketeer squad and a member of the Three Amigos, back in the zone days. There was a place over some hills, where there was a factory of some sort and we used do fly-throughs. I'm gonna have to see if it still exists. Maybe I'll give Mark a holler, if I can find his contact info.

That's in different version of the game ... this one is the one befor that one came out ... with the trains / tracks and such. (different version of game)

The befor mentioned: problem / not being talked about = profiles

setting of profiles ...
I have a cordless mouse and keyboard, and seems the F(keys) in profile don't show (ie. F4; example) but can still be used, just doesn't show as such (F'wot-ever') in proflie as such ... but is acually there ... such as in Macros'. ;)

But if you have a profile made with Windows 98SE/ or earlier ... can be used and will show the (F'keys') as such in the profile ... in Windows if made thru XP (are in fact there) but just show as blank areas' in profile. (I use these keys in the "HAT SWITH w/veiws for example)

fixing the sidewinder software problem

Contrary to previous post, you CAN RECORD your settings in the sidewinder software and its easy. Just reboot your computer into Safe mode (f8 key) when it boots, if you already have the precision 2 software loaded, just go to programs and select microsoft hardware/games etc out to show sidewinder tray and it will show at the bottom, then open it up and go to properties and you will be able to record, test and anything else you want to do just like you did in windows 98. I've been doing this for years and I know it works
